Greek cookies for Christmas? When it comes to Christmas cookies unless you’re Greek, you probably would not even think about Greece or Greek foods. However, ever since I was inducted into my first Greek family, back in Australia, I developed a real taste for these delicious treats. In my opinion, you really should think about adding some Christmas Greek cookies to your Holiday dessert menu!
Surprisingly, Greek Christmas cookies are not overly sweet, despite being dipped in syrup and/or layered with confectionery’s sugar. That being said, they are really delicious and even a little addictive. Traditionally, they are served with great cup of coffee or a good cup of tea as soon as dinner has been completed. However, some are even worthy of Champagne!
My absolute favourites are:
Kourambiedes a delicious traditional buttery cookie that looks like they resemble the snowy mountains. Soft and fluffy, yet have a slight crunch with a delicate almond flavour. Heavily dusted in layers of luscious powdered sugar. Although, don’t let that fool you into thinking that these are sweet. They are absolutely perfect for accompanying a cup of coffee or tea. Yet, equally perfect when served on New Years Eve with a glass of champagne! 😉 You’ll find both the traditional buttery version and an equally delicious vegan buttery cookie.
Melomakarona a semi-soft, small oblong shaped cookie that have been dipped in delicate aromatic syrup after baking and then dusted with ground cinnamon, ground cloves and crushed walnuts. Depending on what takes your fancy, head over to the blog to find the recipe you would like to try: Traditional melomakarona or perhaps you would like to try melomakarona with chocolate.
Paximadakia a crunchy cookie baked twice with almonds and spices. Something similar to Italian biscotti. Absolutely perfect when paired with a good cup of coffee or tea.
Happy Holiday Baking!
